INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  The good news: as of Monday morning, none of the threatened rain has occurred. The bad news: high winds Sunday night with temperatures remaining in the 40s melted a good deal of snow so that there is now only 4-6" of snow in the Lake Placid area with some bare spots in open, south-facing areas. It still doesn't appear that we will lose all of the accumulated snow as it will cool down by this afternoon.  And trying to be positive, this warm spell has settled the light fluffy snow so we will have to make a good base.  By Wednesday we will have high temperatures only around 20 with some snow showers before next weekend, so don't count this season out just yet.  Meanwhile, best skiing will be on groomed/tilled trails at the ski centers.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:

  •               Base Depth - 2-10 inches
Surface Conditions -Wet powder and crust
                  Km Open - 35?
Remarks -  Wet areas from McKenzie Pond Road to Saranac Lake, and thin conditions on the golf courses make some sections unskiable, but the rest of the trail has retained its cover and will be good again with 3-4" of new snow.

    BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 20 inches
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 3 feet
Surface Conditions: Wet powder and crust
Remarks: Hiking trail from ADK Loj to Marcy Dam no longer skiable.  Truck Trail is still mostly skiable.  Avalanche Pass is still in good shape as far as the top of the pass, but many open drainages after that. Still some rocks to dodge between the dam and Avalanche Camp.  Calamity Brook Trail has many long wet areas, and is not recommended for skiing.
  • Skiers and snowshoers were crossing both Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden, but not recommended until it cools off, and then caution definitely required near inlets and outlets.
  • Marcy now skiable above 50 meter bridge. Below that point, rock avoidance has been described as "technical".  Wright Peak skiable above the junction with the hiking trail.  Skis and snowshoes are still required in the High Peaks and needed elsewhere.
  • Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
  • Otherwise, all the early season favorites including Connery Pond, Whiteface Highway , Newcomb Lake, Fish Pond, Raquette Falls, and Hays Brook have skiable cover, but will need some new snow to be much fun to ski.  Down to about 10" in Newcomb, but Newcomb Lake Road remains very skiable and its gentle grades recommend it until we do get more snow.   Should also mention that the Lake Road to the Lower Ausable Lake remains skiable but not the trail to Johns Brook Lodge.

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  With settling and some melting we now have 8-10" of snow on the ground in the Lake Placid.  So far, none of the threatened rain has occurred, but that is still predicted for later today, Sunday and into Monday, after which it begins to cool down. It doesn't appear that we will lose all of the accumulated snow, and trying to be positive, this warm spell could settle the light fluffy snow we have to make a good base while also helping the lakes to finally freeze all the slush.  It will cool off by Wednesday with some snow showers before next weekend, so don't count this season out just yet.  Meanwhile, "ski it while you can."

Tupper Lake's free groomed trails have 6-12" of base with good skiing.
  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
                  Base Depth - 8-15 inches
Surface Conditions -Wet powder and crust
                  Km Open - 50
Remarks -  Still a bit marginal with some wet areas from McKenzie Pond Road to Saranac Lake, but the rest of the trail is in great shape.

    BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 25 inches
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 3-4 feet
Surface Conditions: Wet powder and crust
Remarks: Hiking trail from ADK Loj to Marcy Dam is skiable but marginal, so the Truck Trail is still the better choice. If skiing from the Loj, the old Marcy Dam Trail is the better route, but with the warm conditions the hiking trail will likely be getting rougher by the hour this weekend.  Avalanche Pass is in generally good shape. Still some rocks to dodge between the dam and Avalanche Camp.  Calamity Brook Trail has a few wet areas, but is  now skiable with skiers and snowshoers crossing Flowed Lands.
  • Skiers and snowshoers are crossing both Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden. Slush under the snow less of a problem with the warm weather (at least it won't freeze on your skis), and with the snow settled on the ice it should freeze solidly when it finally gets cold again.  Caution definitely required near inlets and outlets.  Other lakes may be safe, but no definite reports of any other lake crossings.
  • Marcy now skiable above 50 meter bridge. Below that point, rock avoidance has been described as "technical".  Wright Peak skiable above the junction with the hiking trail.  Skis and snowshoes are now required in the High Peaks and needed elsewhere.
  • Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
  • Otherwise, all the early season favorites including Connery Pond, Whiteface Highway , Newcomb Lake, Fish Pond, Raquette Falls, and Hays Brook are skiable.   Should also mention that the Lake Road to the Lower Ausable Lake is skiable and the trail to Johns Brook Lodge is skiable, but with more rough spots than last weekend.

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  There is currently 18-24" of snow on the ground in the Lake Placid area including another 2-3" of new snow over the weekend.  As of Wednesday morning, the snow is still light, but that will likely change as afternoon temperatures will be in the upper 30s with rain possible. Thursday will be cooler again, but then it warms up on Friday and stays warm through the weekend with a chance of more rain. It doesn't appear that we will lose all of the accumulated snow, and trying to be positive, this warm spell could settle the light fluffy snow we have to make a good base while also helping the lakes to finally freeze all the slush.  Meanwhile, "ski it while you can."

Tupper Lake's free groomed trails have 6-12" of base with good skiing.
  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
                  Base Depth - 10-30 inches
                  Surface Conditions -Powder
                  Km Open - 50
Remarks -  Still a bit marginal with some wet areas from McKenzie Pond Road to Saranac Lake, but the rest of the trail is in great shape.

    BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 32 inches
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4 feet
                  Surface Conditions: Powder
Remarks: Hiking trail from ADK Loj to Marcy Dam is skiable but marginal, so the Truck Trail is still the better choice.  Avalanche Pass is in generally good shape now with the new snow and some admirable shoveling. Still some rocks to dodge between the dam and Avalanche Camp.  Calamity Brook Trail also now skiable with skiers and snowshoers crossing Flowed Lands.
  • Skiers and snowshoers are crossing both Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden, although slush under the snow remains a problem.  Caution definitely required near inlets and outlets.  Other lakes may be safe, but slush appears to be a universal problem so far this year.
Should also mention that the Lake Road to the Lower Ausable Lake is skiable and the trail to Johns Brook Lodge is now skiable with only a few rough spots.

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  There is currently 18-24" of snow on the ground in the Lake Placid area including another 2-3" of new snow over the weekend.  The snow is still light without much of a base, so some backcountry trails are still a little rocky. Only 10-12" in Saranac Lake, but now further west at Paul Smiths there is 16".    Monday's high will only be around 20, but warming to 30 on Tuesday and then progressively warmer through the week and into the weekend.  Some additional new snow mid-week before it warms enough that anything coming down will be that "other stuff". (Trying to be positive, this warm spell could settle the light fluffy snow we have to make a good base while also helping the lakes to finally freeze all the slush.) Next update Wednesday or Thursday when we have a better idea of the extent of this threatened thaw.  Meanwhile, "ski it while you can."

Tupper Lake's free groomed trails have 6-12" of base with good skiing.
  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
                  Base Depth - 10-30 inches
                  Surface Conditions -Powder
                  Km Open - 50
Remarks -Old Mountain Road has perfect cover and a good skied in track.  Over two feet of snow at the top of the pass.  Still a bit marginal from McKenzie Pond Road to Saranac Lake, but good skiing to McKenzie Pond and up the hill.

Should also mention that the Lake Road to the Lower Ausable Lake is skiable and the trail to Johns Brook Lodge is now skiable with only a few rough spots.
