  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  • After a day of checking, it seems that 1-2" we received in snow squalls Thursday afternoon did more good than one would have expected.  The best skiing will still be at the groomed centers, as packed ungroomed areas remain  very fast, and unbroken areas have a thin breakable crust.  The exception is that last weekend it never warmed up all that much at the elevation of Lake Colden, so skiing there and higher on Marcy is still pretty good - if a bit faster than with true powder conditions.
  • Temperatures will start off below zero before warming to the low 20s.  Sunday through Wednesday will remain below normal with a continuing chance of light snow.  Some warming possible by the end of the coming week

JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
  •               Base Depth - 8-12""
  •               Surface Conditions -  powder on frozen granular
                       Km Open - 50
Remarks -  All sections skiable, but great care is needed as all downhills are very fast. Descent to McKenzie Pond skiable but still not really recommended until we get a report that more than an inch of new snow fell there.

    BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 30"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'
Surface Conditions:  Packed powder and crust
Remarks:    Snow at the stake at Lake Colden has settled back from its earlier depth, but coverage on the trails is still good.  Skis or snowshoes now required for all travel in the High Peaks and definitely needed everywhere else.  Slides are definitely very dangerous as the snow of two weeks ago fell on ice or smooth crust; and last week's snow just added more weight to an already unstable situation.
Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden definitely crossable, and the firm wind-packed powder means still no slush problems there. All other smaller bodies of water safe to cross,  just be very careful around inlets or outlets.   Both the Avalanche Pass and Calamity Brook approaches to Lake Colden remain in generally good shape once one get close to the lakes.  Otherwise faster than usual conditions.  Unbridged streams have refrozen, including the Opalescent River in Flowed Lands.
Otherwise, all popular backcountry routes (Newcomb Lake, Hays Brook, Fish Pond, Raquette Falls, Ausable Lake Rd., Whiteface Landing) have cover and are skiable. Best bet is the Newcomb Lake road as it is wide, smooth gentle and has all of two inches of new snow.
  • Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.
  • Marcy Dam Truck Trail and Old Marcy Dam Trail from the Loj skiable with caution.
  •  Fish Pond Truck Trail: Blowdowns have been cleared. There was slush on the lakes and ponds before the rain.  The coming cold weather may now be able to freeze the slush and make for good skiing again.
  • Whiteface Highway:  Given the wind recently there may be  some areas blown clear - otherwise good cover.  Be prepared for strong winds and cold temperatures.
  • Marcy trail still be a bit rough between Marcy Dam and the Phelps Mt. trail junction, but good cover above there with enough new snow to make skiing merely faster than usual.  Downed trees below Indian Falls have now been cleared.  Thanks to Ron Konowitz, Katie Tyler, and Colden Caretaker Sean Platt.

Despite some momentarily fierce snow squalls on Wednesday, the Lake Placid area only picked up at most 1/2" of new snow, so nothing has really changed from the beginning of the week. The forecast now says we could pick up 1-3" by Friday morning.  We'll see.  At the upper end, skiing on the gentler terrain will again be quite good as we still have a good base.  At the lower end, it's back to micro spikes or crampons for the coming weekend in most areas.  Significant lake effect snowfall predicted for Tug Hill and perhaps the southwestern ADKs in case you can get there for the weekend.

As of noon on Monday we have not seen more than a dusting from the promised snow showers.  Looks as though we'll have to wait to see what we get on Wednesday when the next weather system moves through.  The conditions reported below thus remain unchanged.  Next update on Thursday, 2/27, when we know how much new snow has fallen by then.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  • In a word, "variable".  Saturday's warm temperatures still did not due too much damage to the snowpack overall, but places with poor drainage turned to slush or have a layer of slush underneath. Now that it has cooled down, packed areas have become very fast while unbroken areas have a thin breakable crust. As predicted, the best skiing today and into next week will be at the groomed centers. The only exception is that it never warmed up all that much at the elevation of Lake Colden, so skiing there is still pretty good - just not so good getting there.
  • It will cool off Sunday afternoon and remain a bit colder than normal for he rest of the coming week.  Snow showers predicted Sunday and Monday and perhaps Wednesday as well.  If we get as little as three inches we will have a nice surface on the now firm base.  Less than three inches, however, and the trails will remain fast an icy

As of Friday morning we have temperatures just above freezing with some rain overnight.  So far no heavy rain and no great loss of snow. Still expected to be in the 40s today with some wind, so there will be some additional snow loss.  Surface conditions for the weekend will be anybody's guess, but at least Saturday will stay warm enough to prevent surfaces from becoming very fast and icy.  Possibility of some snow as it cools down for Sunday.  It will be cold from Sunday through most of the week.  Absent much new snow, the groomed centers will be the best skiing.  With 3-5 inches of new snow, ungroomed areas will be good.  Stay tuned.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  • Highs now predicted only mid-30s today and Thursday, but followed by a mix turning to all rain Thursday night and Friday.  It will, so far at least, be a short thaw with temperatures falling below freezing Friday night and then temperatures in the low 30s under sunny skies on Saturday.  Given this pattern, the best skiing this weekend will probably be at the groomed centers.  None of the ungroomed backcountry routes should lose too much cover, but surfaces may be hard and choppy.

JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
  •               Base Depth - 10-18"
  •               Surface Conditions - powder
                       Km Open - 50
Remarks -  All sections skiable and all sections broken out.

    BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 34"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'
                  Surface Conditions: Powder
Remarks:    Snow at the stake at Lake Colden has settled back from its earlier depth, but coverage on the trails is very good.  Skis or snowshoes now required for all travel in the High Peaks and definitely needed everywhere else.  Slides are definitely very dangerous as the snow of two weeks ago fell on ice or smooth crust; and last week's snow just added more weight to an already unstable situation.
Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden definitely crossable, and the firm wind-packed powder means no slush problems there. All other smaller bodies of water safe to cross,  just be very careful around inlets or outlets.  The only downside of this snow is that slush under the snow is again a problem on some lakes - surprisingly so given how thick the ice is after all the cold days with little snow cover.  Both the Avalanche Pass and Calamity Brook approaches to Lake Colden are in good shape.  Unbridged streams have refrozen, including the Opalescent River in Flowed Lands.
Otherwise, all popular backcountry routes (Newcomb Lake, Hays Brook, Fish Pond, Raquette Falls, Ausable Lake Rd., Whiteface Landing) are skiable.
  • Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.
  •  Fish Pond Truck Trail: Blowdowns have been cleared. Slush conditions possible on the lakes and ponds.
  • Whiteface Highway:  The wind picked up after the last storm, so there may be  some areas blown clear - otherwise good cover.
  • Marcy trail may still be a bit rough between Marcy Dam and the Phelps Mt. trail junction, but good cover above there.  Downed trees below Indian Falls have now been cleared.  Thanks to Ron Konowitz and Colden Caretaker Sean Platt.

Monday is another cold, sunny day with no new snow, so the conditions below remain the same.  Highs today will only be about 15, followed by clouds and an inch or two of snow on Tuesday.  No change in the forecast for the rest of the week, except that is will be back below freezing again by this coming Saturday.  Next update on Wednesday 2/19 when we have a better (maybe worse) idea about the thaw at the end of the week.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  • As noted earlier this newest snow is denser than our previous storm, so pretty much all hazards on the popular routes are fully covered. Now we can enjoy mid-winter conditions for a couple of days before the forecast deteriorates at the end of the week.  Highs now predicted near 40 on Wednesday, followed by rain Thursday and Friday.  So ski it while you can!

JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
  •               Base Depth - 10-18"
  •               Surface Conditions - powder
                       Km Open - 50
Remarks -  All sections skiable and all sections broken out.

    BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 44"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'
                  Surface Conditions: Powder
Remarks:    Thursday's storm dumped about a foot at Lake Colden, so the good conditions are even better.  Skis or snowshoes now required for all travel in the High Peaks and definitely needed everywhere else.  Slides are definitely very dangerous as last week's new snow fell on ice or smooth crust; and this new snow adds more weight to the snow.
Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden and all other smaller bodies of water safe to cross,  just be very careful around inlets or outlets.  The only downside of this snow is that slush under the snow is again a problem a problem - surprisingly so given how thick the ice is after all the cold days with little snow cover.
  • Whiteface Highway:  The wind picked up on Friday afternoon, so there may be aras blown clear - otherwise good cover.
  • Marcy trail may still be a bit rough between Marcy Dam and the Phelps Mt. trail junction, but good cover above there.  Only problem is a few trees down below Indian Falls.

No new snow since yesterday, so the good conditions reported below haven't changed.  Many skiers out on the trails on Friday, so most popular routes should have been already broken out.  Chance of more snow this afternoon and evening, then continued cloudy with high temperatures in the teens for Sunday.  Monday will be sunny with a high near 20, followed by snow Monday night into Tuesday and warming to the upper 20s.  Wednesday will be sunny with temperatures in the 30s.
