Update 2/26/2015

2/26/2015

As predicted, Thursday is again cold with maybe a chance of some light snow this afternoon and evening. It will remain cold on Friday, but warm to the upper teens on Saturday and then near 30 on Sunday, perhaps staying with daytime temperatures in the low 30s through Wednesday.

Otherwise, no change in the surface conditions with all ski centers, the Jackrabbit Trail, and all popular backcountry routes in great shape.

    INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
      • No real change in the surface conditions since the last report and no significant new snow in sight.  Temperatures are generally warmer than the previous week, but it will still be cold with high temps only in the single digits on Thursday and Friday.  Then upper teens on Saturday and maybe even above freezing for a bit on Sunday.  Continued warm next Monday, and we'll have to see if it continues warm or goes back below freezing.
      •  Cascade X-C Ski Center is hosting the Wood'n Ski Rendezvous and Nordic Festival After Party as a fundraiser for BETA/ASTC on March 1st.  BETA/ASTC members can race for just $12 and Cascade has wooden skis available to rent.  All proceeds from the race go directly to the organization!
The 5km race starts at 2pm with the after party (including live music) going till 6.  Hope to see you all there!
Super thank you to Cascade for their generosity and to our sponsors Saratoga Eagle and Champlain National Bank.  We are excited to have these companies as BETA/ASTC supporters!"  More info here

Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.  Skis or snowshoes required in the High Peaks, needed elsewhere.  This light snow plus some significant wind loading means that no slide can be considered safe for skiing unless carefully analyzed.
      • Good skiing right from the Loj and through to Lake Colden.
      • Wright Peak and Marcy good skiing from top to bottom, although there are still a few rocks to dodge in the first mile above Marcy Dam on the Marcy trail.
      • The Calamity Brook Trail fully skiable.  Opalescent River now frozen at Flowed Lands and crossable.
      • Road to Newcomb Lake and Moose Pond good skiing with now nearly 30" of cover.
      • Fish Pond and Hays Brook truck trails skiable.  Raquette Falls also skiable, but even with this new snow the steep downhill about three miles in may still have rocks just under the surface.
      • Connery Pond to Whiteface Landing skiable.
      • Lake Colden and  Avalanche Lake crossable.  Other lakes also safe to cross.
      • Whiteface Highway skiable from the Toll House.  Be prepared for the cold as the highway exposed to any wind that might be blowing.
      • Keene Valley/Garden Parking has better cover, but it's still likely to be a bit rough skiing to JBL.  Despite some additional snow, the rocks are still "disguised but not covered", but the trail is skiable with care.
      • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake packed by snowmobiles and skiable.

    INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
      • No real change in the surface conditions since the last report.  Over the past weekend we endured the coldest temperatures of the season with a few inches of new light snow.  Tuesday has started out cold, but will warm to 10-15 and Wednesday will be about 20 before another cold front comes through and gives us some more light snow and cold temps Thursday and Friday.  Saturday and Sunday look to have highs in the 20s, so just about perfect skiing for the coming weekend.  Still no thaw in sight.

    INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
      • The additional 10-14" of  snow predicted for earlier this week ended up being only 3-4", but no problem as the skiing is great.  With no snow in the Sierras and too much snow in Boston, we have what might be called "Goldilocks" snow cover for the long weekend and into next week.
      • Temperatures this weekend will be cold with nighttime lows well below zero and daytime highs only in the single digits for Friday through Monday.  Warming to the 20s on Tuesday and Wednesday with a  chance of additional light snow both days.  No thaw in sight.

Update 2/8/2015

2/8/2015

We have picked up 3-4" of new snow in the past 24 hours, and the forecast calls for another 10-14" to fall in several stages before ending Monday night.  Thus the good conditions reported below will get even better.  This nice light snow will make for relatively easy trail breaking, and we'll try to pass along reports of trails that have been broken out.  This coming week will warm to the 20's on Wednesday, and then cool off again by Friday with highs only around 10 degrees Friday and through the weekend.

    INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
      • Well we finally benefitted from one of the storms that has been "plaguing" the coastal cities.  On Monday we picked up 8-10" of very light powder as temperatures never went very far above zero during the storm.  Given that our base had been slowly building, this new snow was all that was needed to put all popular ski routes in great shape. Cold Thursday and Friday with high temperatures only 10-12.  Warmer on Saturday, but then again colder than normal, but not really frigid, for Sunday and into next week.    Chance of additional light snow most days, but not enough to change the overall conditions.  No thaw in sight.
      • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •              Base Depth - 12-16"
    •                Surface Conditions - Powder
                     Km Open - 50 km
  •                        Remarks - Most of the trail should be broken out by the coming weekend.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 38"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  4-5'
                    Surface Conditions: Powder
Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.  Skis or snowshoes required in the High Peaks, needed elsewhere.  This new light snow plus some significant wind loading means that no slide can be considered safe for skiing unless carefully analyzed.

      • The Calamity Brook Trail fully skiable.  Opalescent River now frozen at Flowed Lands and crossable.
      • Road to Newcomb Lake and Moose Pond good skiing with now 20" of cover.
      • Fish Pond and Hays Brook truck trails skiable.  Raquette Falls also skiable, but even with this new snow the steep downhill about three miles in may still have rocks just under the surface.
      • Connery Pond to Whiteface Landing skiable.
      • Lake Colden and  Avalanche Lake crossable, but still avoid the outlet of Avalanche Lake. Other lakes also safe to cross.
      • Whiteface Highway skiable from the Toll House.
      • Keene Valley/Garden Parking has better cover, but it's still likely to be a bit rough skiing to JBL.  The rocks are "disguised but not covered", but the trail is skiable with care.
      • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake packed by snowmobiles and skiable.

    INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
      • Well we finally benefitted from one of the storms that has been "plaguing" the coastal cities.  On Monday we picked up 8-10" of very light powder as temperatures never went very far above zero during the storm.  Given that our base had been slowly building, this new snow was all that was needed to put all popular ski routes in great shape.  A bit warmer on Wednesday and then again on Saturday when temperatures will be in the 20s.  Otherwise, continued cold with a chance of additional light snow most days and highs 10-15.  Next update on Friday, 2/6 when we have a better idea of the weekend weather.
      • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
      •               Base Depth - 10-15"
      •               Surface Conditions - Powder and crust
                             Km Open - 50 km
  •                        Remarks - Most of the trail should be broken out by the coming weekend.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 36"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  4-5'
                    Surface Conditions: Powder
Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.  Skis or snowshoes required in the High Peaks, needed elsewhere.  Good traction still required for the steeper mountain trails.
      • Good skiing right from the Loj and through to Lake Colden.
      • Wright Peak and Marcy good skiing from top to bottom.
      • The Calamity Brook Trail fully skiable.  Opalescent River now frozen at Flowed Lands and crossable.
      • Road to Newcomb Lake good skiing with now 20" of cover.  Moose Pond now also good skiing.

2/1 Update

2/1/2015

The forecast now says we might get 4-6" of snow from the storm coming out of the midwest.  We may not be able to post an update until later on Monday, but any new snow will simply improve the conditions as reported below. If we really get dumped on, then trail breaking will be an issue.
