Jackrabbit Ski Trail, above Whiteface Inn Rd at Placid Lean-to, Feb 23, 2018
INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  •   As noted in the previous post, we were hit pretty hard by the thaw; and the forecast doesn't promise much relief through to the end of next week.  Of couse there is still another whole month when conditons could be amazing, but right now skiing in the Lake Placid-Saranac Lake area is pretty limited.  Looks like another weekend/week of hiking with traction - even if hiking on the Jackrabbit Trail.
  • The only bright spot may be the southern Adirondacks where Lapland Lake picked up 4" of "packable" snow on about a foot of base.
  • As predicted before the thaw, many areas did not lose all of the accumulated snow, so it won't take much to get things back in skiable shape - but that doesn't seem to be in the forecast.

    JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS

  • Base depth:  0-10"
  •  Surface Conditions:  hard frozen granular and ice
  •  Km Open -
  •  Remarks -  Section starting from Whiteface Inn Lane has good cover to the top of the pass, but the snow is bulletproof and needs at least a few inches of fresh snow to make it enjoyable to ski.  From the top of the pass, the long downhill to McKenzie Pond is not currently skiable.  There are multiple long patches that have melted down to the leaves.  The rapid thaw and rain overwhelmed many drainage ditches so there is water damage to the snow surface and water ice flows in some spots.    In from McKenzie Pond Rd. also has periodic water ice with bare spots/water damage on at least the lower part of the climb from McKenzie Pond.  Old Mt. Road section has bare spots and stretches of water ice.

    BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
  •  Good traction aids (Microspikes or more aggressive crampons) will be needed on nearly all trails - especially if they have been previously skied or snowshoed.
    •     Snow Depth at Lake Colden: no current report
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  4-5'
Surface Conditions: Hard frozen granular and water ice.
    •     Some cover left on Meadow Lane, but likely bare spots on any south-facing hill going toward Marcy Dam.  Hiking trail definitely not skiable.
      • Road to Newcomb Lake and Moose Pond still have about 10" of snow there, and drainage should have prevented both water damage and the formation of water ice..
      • Fish Pond and Hays Brook truck trails all retained skiable cover - just need a few inches on top of the crust.
      • Lake Colden and Avalanche Lake crossable, but extra caution is needed around inlets or outlets..
      • Whiteface Highway - no current report
      • Keene Valley/Garden Parking - Mostly a very hard frozen granular or water ice surface as far as JBL.
      • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake again too icy.

Thursday morning post-thaw update, 2/22:  Wednesday saw record-breaking temperatures nearly everywhere.  The high temperatures (around 70 in many places) combined with a steady breeze and bright sunshine melted much of the snow that we had built up.  Mt. Van Hoevenberg is down to 1 km, and Paul Smiths VIC reports that the trails are only open for snowshoeing today.  Temperatures have returned below freezing, but will go up into the 40s through the weekend and into next week.  Some chance of a few periods of snow, but it isn't a very good forecast for skiing.  Hiking trails are either ice or mud, but the pond skating may be the 'best game in town". The snow's not all gone gone everywhere, and we'll look around to see where even a few inches of new snow might be able to produce some acceptable surfaces to slide on.

As feared, the next big meltdown has started with temperature already approaching 50 as of noon on Monday.  Rain will start this evening and continue off and on through Wednesday when temperatures may get into the 60s.  Instad of winter storm warnings, we now have flood "watches" for the area.  And even after Monday there is no big cooling - just 30s Thursday and Friday and then back into the 40s for the coming weekend.

With the warmer temperatures, surface conditions will be spring-like for most of the week.  There is a good base in most places, so we don't expect a complete loss of snow.  We will, however, be out checking around as of Thursday to see what's left.  All in all, however, it appears this weekend will be one for hiking with traction aids.  Just don't count on being able to cross any unbridged streams - at least not ones of any size.

Nextp update on Thursday evening 2/22 after we've had a chance to look around at the extent of the damage.  Meanwhile, ski jumping may or may not happen on Tuesday, and apparently not on the big jump as originally planned.  Final Olympic note:  Women's Sprint Relay on Wednesday, 2/21. 5 AM live local time, and hopefully featured on NBC later if there are good results to show - keep your fingers crossed.

Another Meltdown Underway - 2/15/18

Quick update before the President's weekend folks.  Unfortunately we're in the midst of another significant meltdown.  Its 46F in Lake Placid this afternoon, with rain in the forecast for this evening and early Friday morning.

We did a big tour in the High Peaks yesterday - out to Avalanche Lake, up the Trap Dike and down the Southeast Slide on Colden, and returned via the Lake Arnold trail to Marcy Dam and the Loj.  All trails were extremely firm and fast, with hard water ice in places below Marcy Dam.  Untracked snow outside of the ski/snowshoe track is very crusty and difficult to ski.  Snow cover on trails was good yesterday but will be diminished further by today's warm temperatures.  Snow on the slides and above treeline is mostly rain-affected and crusty from the precipitation on Sunday.

Conditions will be similar on most sections of the Jackrabbit Ski Trail and other surrounding trails.

Skiers heading out this weekend should expect to encounter difficult, icy conditions with rocks and roots exposed in some areas.  After the rain this evening temperatures will drop again on Friday evening to a low of -1F.  Sunny with temps in the mid-20sF on Saturday and Sunday.

The best skiing will be on groomed trails this weekend.  If you must go into the backcountry, stick to the flatter trails.  We don't recommend attempting Marcy, Wright Peak or Whales Tail ski trails this weekend.

We'll update again on Monday.  Until then, think snow.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  •   We continue to ride a virtual "temperature roller-coaster" as it will be near 40 today, above 40 on Thursday and into Friday before becoming a bit colder than normal on Saturday, followed by warming to again around 40 early next week.  Given this pattern, it would almost require hourly updates to provide truly current conditions, but we'll do our best with daily or every other day reports.  There is sufficient base that we won't lose it all with Thursday's warm temperatures, but we will need some new snow Friday as it cools down to have decent skiing for the weekend - at least away from the groomed centers.  As of today, trails that have been skied are hard and fast with just a bit of new powder in the Lake Placid area.  Areas that have not been skied or snowshoed have a loose, sugary surface that would be good skiing.
  • Next update late Friday when we know how much snow we might get and whether the warm temps continue further into President's Week.  And a highlight in another Nordic sport, ski jumping, will be the first competition on Lake Placid's big 120-meter jump in many years.  Training on Monday from 11 AM to 1 PM (plus a night jump on the smaller hill), and then a competition on Tuesday starting at 11 AM.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS
  • Base depth:  8-12"
  •  Surface Conditions:  granular and crust
  •  Km Open - 50 km
  •  Remarks -  Steeper terrain will be quite fast and perhaps not advisable until it softens up or we get more snow.

  • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
  •  Skis or snowshoes absolutely required by regulation to at least be carried in the High Peaks and needed elsewhere .  Good traction aids (Microspikes or more aggressive crampons) will be needed on the steeper trails if they have been heavily skied or snowshoed.
    •     Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 38"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'
          Surface Conditions: Powder
      • Hiking trail to Marcy Dam now skiable, but still with some thin spots and a few rocks to dodge.  Truck Trail good all the way to Marcy Dam.  Wright Peak and Marcy may still be a bit rough on their lower approaches, but skiable above the Phelps Mt. junction on Marcy or after leaving the hiking trail on Wright.
      • Road to Newcomb Lake and  Moose Pond in great shape with about 20" of snow there.
      • Fish Pond and Hays Brook truck trails all skiable.
      • Lake Colden and Avalanche Lake crossable.
      • Whiteface Highway - no current report
      • Keene Valley/Garden Parking not really skiable to JBL as thee is just a narrow, firm snowshoe track.
      • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake again fuly covered, but will have a very hard surface due to the snowmobile traffic. Mr. Van Trail skiable from the Loj. No report on the Marcy Brook crossing, but an approach via Meadow Lane and the Klondike Trail will be fine.

The snow late last week made for a great weekend of skiing.  Unfortunately, by Sunday evening the temperatures were in the 40s - not long enough to melt much of the nice snow, but enough to make that snow become rock hard by Monday morning when the temperatures dropped.  Cold tonight, then warming with temperatures again in the 40s on Wednesday and Thursday.  And yes, there could be some rain on those days.  Then cold again on Friday with perhaps enough snow to cover up all the crust.

For Monday, it's back to good traction for hiking, but Wednesday and Thursday would see soft "spring" surfaces.  Mount Van Hoevenberg reported "wet and ice" on Monday, but still that all 50 km were open.  They should be able to groom some of the flatter terrain, and that will be the best skiing until it either thaws or we get more snow.

Next update on Wednesday when we have a better idea of the temperatures range Wednesday and Thursday plus a better idea of exactly how much snow we might get on Friday.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  •   Wednesday's storm brought the are 7-8" of snow pretty much everywhere with virtually no wind and cold temperatures so the snow is nice and light.  It's enough to fully recover from the thaws, but not so much as to be arduous when breaking trail.  A bit more snow possible each day Friday through Sunday with temperatures moderating to around freezing Saturday and Sunday.  Next week will continue mild, but not too warm with again more chances for some additional snow.
  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS
  • Base depth:  8-12"
  •  Surface Conditions:  Powder
  •  Km Open - 50 km
  •  Remarks -  Trail breaking will not be much of an issue as the snow is light.  We'll note when the longer sections are broken out.  Old Mt. Road section tracked as is McKenzie section.  Up to 12" of snow in Paul Smiths, so trail breaking there will be a bit harder, but still not that bad.

  • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
  •  Skis or snowshoes absolutely required by regulation in the High Peaks and needed elsewhere    Good traction aids (Microspikes or more aggressive crampons) should be carried if going on the steeper trails as this light snow may slide off the underlying ice. As with the Jackrabbit Trail, trail breaking will not be that much of an issue, but we pass along reports as we get them.
    •     Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 38"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'
          Surface Conditions: Powder
      • Hiking trail to Marcy Dam now skiable,   Wright Peak and Marcy may still be a bit rough on their lower approaches, but very skiable above the Phelps Mt. junction on Marcy or after leaving the hiking trail on Wright.
      • Road to Newcomb Lake and  Moose Pond in great shape.

      • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake again skiable. Will be packed by snowmobiles.
      • Mr. Van Trail skiable from the Loj. No report on the Marcy Brook crossing, but an approach via Meadow Lane and the Klondike Trail will be fine.

  • FURTHER UPDATE 2/6/2018
  • Forecast for Wednesday looks very good.  At least 6" of snow, but likely to 10".  This will erase any effects of the recent thaws.  Local snows had produced some good conditions before this big snow, but now every area will be in true mid-winter condition with no new thaw in sight.  Next full update still on Thursday, 2/8, but the report should be good.
  • UPDATE 2/5/2018
  • Not much new snow on Sunday night despite predictions of maybe 3-6".  Still more snow possible on Wednesday and no thaw in sight.  Next full update on Thursday, 2/8, when we see how much snow we have actually received.  Otherwise, little change to the report below except for confirmation from skiers Saturday afternoon and Sunday that the light fluff tended to just slide off the hard crust.  Hikers reported similar conditions with the snow sliding off the bulges of water ice.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
  •    The area from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake, Paul Smiths, and Tupper Lake has picked up about 4" of new light powder in the past 24 hours or so.  Not enough to fully recover from the icy conditions due to the several recent thaws, but a good start.  More snow possible on Sunday into Sunday night and again on Tuesday.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS
  •         Surface Conditions:  3-6" of hard, crusty base with 2-4" of powder on top.
  •         Km Open - 50 km - skiable, but steeper terrain not really recommended.
  •        Remarks -  Metal-edged skis would be preferable for the McKenzie Pass and Old Mt. Road sections as those sections will be very fast until we get some more snow on Sunday.

  • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
  •  Skis or snowshoes still required in the High Peaks past Marcy Dam.   Good traction aids (Microspikes or more aggressive crampons) required for all backcountry hiking where there is a slope.  The light powder only hides the water ice, making it quite treacherous.
    •     Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 24"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  4-5'
Surface Conditions: Powder on crust or water ice. No reports yet of what fell higher up.
      • Truck trail better than the hiking trail to Marcy Dam,   Wright Peak and Marcy not really skiable.
      • Road to Newcomb Lake still has 14" of cover and is gentle enough to be safe and enjoyable with the new snow.  Moose Pond also has enough cover, but steeper hills.
      • Fish Pond and Hays Brook truck trails all still skiable, but only Hayes Brook is recommended with perhaps a short walk on the few steep hills.
      • Lake Colden and Avalanche Lake crossable, but that is probably of interest only to those hiking with traction.
      • Whiteface Highway - no current report
      • Keene Valley/Garden Parking has about 6" of cover and not  skiable to JBL.
      • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake again skiable. Thin in spots but the snowmobile traffic has packed the new snow to create a reasonably good surface.   Some ATV traffic as well. but the wheel marks aren't deep enough to really be in the way.
      • Mr. Van Trail skiable from the Loj with Marcy Brook solidly frozen, but not really recommended.

On Thursday night we received up to 4" of light powder.  Enough to make for reasonable skiing on the gentler terrain, but in many places the snow just hides the water ice that is underneath.  We'll try to get some more specific reports of new snow depth by the end of the day, but at least Mt. Van Hoevenberg now has 10 km open with a few km of set track on the flatter terrain.

From the remote station in Newcomb it appears that area got about 2", which should be enough for the Newcomb Lake Rd. to Camp Santanoni to be in passable shape.

Temperatures will be cold Friday with a high only in the single digits.  Saturday will see a high in the upper teens, but warming up on Sunday to near freezing.  Some additional snow possible on Saturday, and most days next week, so we may eventually get back in shape on the "installment plan".

For hiking in the High Peaks, this new snow has, if anything, made things more treacherous since the icy spots are now hidden by the snow.  Good traction (microspikes at a minimum) will be needed for any even moderately steep trail this weekend.
