  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Winter came back for a while last week, and we have enough snow to keep us going for another week or so.  Definitely warming up to normal or slightly above normal temperatures into next week, so we'll see a slow melting with "spring surfaces" prevailing. That means that surfaces will be a bit "crispy" each morning until it warms up. Clear today and into Sunday morning with temperatures rising to about 50 today and Sunday, followed by more clouds and showers into the first part of next week.  Good cover in most places through Easter weekend, but that will be it for many areas.
  •        JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •      Base Depth - 0-10 inches
                  Surface Conditions - spring surfaces
                  Km Open - 45
Remarks - River Road stretch is bare as are sections of golf course.  All wooded sections will be skiable through the weekend.  (There may not be any snow visible at the McKenzie Pond Road trailhead, but you'll find some just around the corner.)

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 33"
                    Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4-1/2 - 5 feet
                    Surface Conditions:  spring surfaces
Remarks:  Last week we were reporting mid-winter conditions, but they were just barely "mid-winter", so the approaches to the backcountry will be deteriorating over the weekend.  Still good cover once one is past Marcy Dam, although the Marcy trail is still a bit rough for the 1.2 mi. above Marcy Dam.   No recent report on the hiking trail part of Wright Peak Ski Trail, but that is probably still unskiable.  Hiking trail from ADK Loj skiable, but definitely use old Marcy Dam Trail from the Loj campground. Truck trail is in good shape. Calamity Brook approach is skiable, and tracks lead to the one good crossing of the Opalescent River in Flowed Lands.  Some brooks went out wil the earlier thaw and may be difficult to cross - especially Sunday afternoon with the increased snow melt.
           *  Skis and snowshoes still required in the High Peaks Wilderness Area and needed elsewhere.
      •      *  Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
      •      *  Lake ice remains solid, although there will likely be water on top by Sunday afternoon. South (outlet) end of  Avalanche Lake does have weak ice into which a few have apparently fallen.  Use caution.
      •      *  All other popular tours (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Raquette Falls, Fish Pond, Newcomb Lake, Moose Pond, Ausable Lake Road, Whiteface Highway) still have cover that should last through the weekend.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Winter came back for a while, and we have enough snow to keep us going for a couple more weeks, but we will miss the big midwest storm.  Mostly powder surfaces as of Monday morning, but temperatures will be going above freezing each day this week and going below freezing each night.  Good that the maple syrup producers get another good run, but it means that surfaces will be a bit "crispy" each morning until it warms up.  Through the middle of the week, temperatures will only warm to the upper 30s, but by the weekend it will be the 40's during the day.  Next update on Thursday, 3/28, when we have a better idea of the weekend weather.

  •        JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •      Base Depth - 4-16 inches
Surface Conditions - powder, grading to spring surfaces by the end of the week
                  Km Open - 50
Remarks - Last week's snow has brought the whole trail back to skiable condition.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 39"
                    Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4-1/2 - 5 feet
Surface Conditions:  powder, grading to spring surfaces by the end of the week
Remarks:  Last week's snow has put a nice surface on trails that were already skiable, and we again have mid-winter conditions - just too bad we had to wait until it was officially spring.  Brooks that went out in last weeks thaw (e.g. Marcy Brook at Indian Falls) may remain difficult to cross.  Marcy trail still a bit rough for the 1.2 mi. above Marcy Dam, but overall very skiable.  No recent report on the hiking trail part of Wright Peak Ski Trail, but that is probably still unskiable.  Hiking trail from ADK Loj skiable, but definitely use old Marccy Dam Trail from the Loj campground. Truck trail is in good shape. Calamity Brook approach is skiable, and tracks lead to the one good crossing of the Opalescent River in Flowed Lands.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Winter is back for a while. but in the end the great "winter storm  warning" only produced 5-6" of new, light snow.  Falling on top of the snow we already had, however means a definite improvement in conditions for this weekend and into next week.    Meanwhile,  additional snow flurries will continue through Friday night with temperatures at or just below freezing. Then some sun Saturday and Sunday with temperatures in the upper 30s.  Next week will be a bit warmer, but no major meltdown in sight.  And don't forget that last year on this date was the third day of record-setting high temperatures with the mercury hitting 81 degrees.  Conditions will not be changing over the weekend.  Next update on Monday, 3/25 when we have a better idea of next week's weather.

    Spring Hasn't Sprung Edition

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Winter is back for a while, but in the end the great "winter storm  warning" only produced 5-6" of new, light snow.  Falling on top of the snow we already had means a definite improvement in conditions, but not the dramatic change we hoped for.    Meanwhile,  additional snow flurries will continue through Friday night with temperatures at or just below freezing. Then some sun Saturday and Sunday with temperatures in the upper 30s.  Next week will be a bit warmer, but no major meltdown in sight.  And don't forget that last year on this date was the third day of record-setting high temperatures with the mercury hitting 81 degrees

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •               Base Depth - 4-16 inches
                  Surface Conditions - powder
                  Km Open - 50
Remarks - The new snow has brought the whole trail back to skiable condition.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 40"
                    Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4-1/2 - 5 feet
                    Surface Conditions:  powder
Remarks:  New snow will make for more difficult trail breaking, but mostly it's just put a nice surface on trails that were already skiable.  Brooks that went out in last weeks thaw (e.g. Marcy Brook at Indian Falls) may remain difficult to cross.  Marcy trail remains rough for the 1.2 mi. above Marcy Dam, and the hiking trail part of Wright Peak is probably still unskiable.  Hiking trail from ADK Loj not really recommended yet, but truck trail is in good shape. Calamity Brook approach is skiable, and tracks lead to the one good crossing of the Opalescent River in Flowed Lands.
Skis and snowshoes still required in the High Peaks Wilderness Area and needed elsewhere.
      • Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
      • Lake ice again solid after the cold weather since last Thursday with the exception of the south (outlet) end of Avalanche Lake that has weak ice into which a few have apparently fallen.  Use caution.
      • All other popular tours (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Raquette Falls, Fish Pond, Newcomb Lake, Moose Pond, Ausable Lake Road, Whiteface Highway) still have cover.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Winter is back, but as of 10 AM on Tuesday the great "winter storm  warning" has only produced 3" of new, light snow.  Falling on top of the snow we already had means an improvement in conditions, but not the dramatic change we hoped for.  The storm may redevelop and produce more on Tuesday night, so stay tunes.  Meanwhile, a series of snow squalls and flurries on Friday and Friday night produced 2-4" in the Lake Placid area, and with this new snow we'll have good conditions for the week and for the coming weekend as temperatures will remain at or below freezing through the period.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •               Base Depth - 4-16 inches
                  Surface Conditions - powder
                  Km Open - 50
Remarks - The new snow has brought the whole trail back to skiable condition.

                    Surface Conditions:  powder
Remarks:  New snow will potentially change everything and make for difficult trail breaking, but as of the time of this report it's just put a nice surface on trails that were already skiable.  Brooks that went out in last weeks thaw (e.g. Marcy Brook at Indian Falls) may remain difficult to cross.  Marcy trail remains rough for the 1.2 mi. above Marcy Dam, and the hiking trail part of Wright Peak is unskiable.  Hiking trail from ADK Loj not really recommended yet, but truck trail is in good shape. • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Winter is back!  A series of snow squalls and flurries on Friday and Friday night produced 2-4" in the Lake Placid area, but the big news is the new storm that is likely to produce 10-12 inches by Wednesday morning. The snow may be on the heavy side, but it appears we'll miss any of the really heavy snow, sleet, or rain that areas to the south will get.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Winter is back!  A series of snow squalls and flurries on Friday and Friday night have produced 2-4" in the Lake Placid area.  Actual accumulation is spotty, but all trails are much improved from earlier this week.  Continued cool through the weekend and into the early part of next week with a chance of some additional new snow on Monday.  Thus for the moment we're no longer talking about spring surfaces.

                  Surface Conditions - powder
                  Km Open - 25
Remarks - River Road and golf course sections were bare, so probably not recommended even with the new snow, but still good cover on Old Mountain Road and Whiteface Inn sections.  Still use caution on the hill down to McKenzie Pond, and it is thin for the first few yards in from McKenzie Pond Road.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 33"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4 feet
                    Surface Conditions:  powder
Remarks:  Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj to Marcy Dam still not really skiable since the new snow was very light.   The truck trail is still the only recommended ski route to Marcy Dam.  Avalanche Pass still has good cover.   Small brooks have opened up on the Calamity Brook Trail as has the crossings of the Opalescent in Flowed Lands, and the new snow probably hasn't helped there.  Marcy Trail still rough just above Marcy Dam to the bridge at 1.2 miles. Additionally, the crossing of Marcy Brook at Indian Falls has "gone out" and is difficult. Wright Peak has good cover above the junction with the hiking trail, which was rough but skiable still not so skiable now.  Northside Trail to Johns Brook Lodge no longer passable on skis.
Skis and snowshoes still required in the High Peaks Wilderness Area and needed elsewhere along with traction aids for any steep terrain.
      • Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
      • Lake ice again solid after the cold weather since Thursday.
      • All other popular tours (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Raquette Falls, Fish Pond, Newcomb Lake, Moose Pond, Ausable Lake Road, Whiteface Highway) still have cover.  Whiteface Highway still thin or even bare above the Lake Placid Turn.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Tuesday saw temperatures in the 40s with intermittent rain, but cool weather returned on Wednesday along with some snow squalls that produced and inch or so of new snow.  Some open areas were bare after the thaw, but still generally good cover in the woods in the Lake Placid area.  Continued cool through the weekend with a chance of some new snow Friday morning and Friday night with now a chance of as much as 3" by Saturday morning.  And even if we don't the full 3", just the inch we got Wednesday made for reasonable surfaces. And with temperatures not going much above freezing, surface conditions, while still hard and fast, won't be all that bad for the coming weekend.  That said, the best skiing will be at the groomed centers.

  • **"Spring surfaces" means hard when below freezing, soft corn snow when above.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •               Base Depth - 0-10 inches
                  Surface Conditions - spring surfaces
                  Km Open - 25
Remarks - River Road and golf course sections now not skiable, but still good cover on Old Mountain Road and Whiteface Inn sections.  Use caution on the hill down to McKenzie Pond, and it is thin for the first few yards in from McKenzie Pond Road.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 29"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4 feet
                    Surface Conditions:  spring surfaces
Remarks:  Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj to Marcy Dam no longer really skiable.   The truck trail is again the only recommended ski route to Marcy Dam.  Avalanche Pass still has good cover.   Small brooks have opened up on the Calamity Brook Trail as has the crossings of the Opalescent in Flowed Lands.  Marcy Trail still rough just above Marcy Dam, but the main problem is that reportedly a large group postholed all the way to the summit, leaving a very rough surface for skiing. Additionally, the crossing of Marcy Brook at Indian Falls has "gone out" and is difficult. Wright Peak has good cover above the junction with the hiking trail, which was rough but skiable - likely not so skiable now.
      • Lake ice again solid after the cold weather Thursday and Thursday night.
