  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Tuesday saw temperatures in the 40s with intermittent rain, but cool weather returned on Wednesday along with some snow squalls that produced and inch or so of new snow.  Some open areas were bare after the thaw, but still generally good cover in the woods in the Lake Placid area.  Continued cool with a chance of some new snow Thursday morning and Thursday night.  While it doesn't appear we'll get very much new snow by the weekend, just the inch we got yesterday made for reasonable surfaces. And with temperatures not going much above freezing, surface conditions, while still hard and fast, won't be all that bad for the coming weekend.  That said, the best skiing will be at the groomed centers.

  • **"Spring surfaces" means hard when below freezing, soft corn snow when above.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •               Base Depth - 0-10 inches
                  Surface Conditions - spring surfaces
                  Km Open - 25
Remarks - River Road and golf course sections now not skiable, but still good cover on Old Mountain Road and Whiteface Inn sections.  Use caution on the hill down to McKenzie Pond, and it is thin for the first few yards in from McKenzie Pond Road.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 29"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4 feet
                    Surface Conditions:  spring surfaces
Remarks:  Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj to Marcy Dam no longer really skiable.   The truck trail is again the only recommended ski route to Marcy Dam.  Avalanche Pass still has good cover.   Small brooks have opened up on the Calamity Brook Trail as has the crossings of the Opalescent in Flowed Lands.  Marcy Trail still rough just above Marcy Dam, but the main problem is that reportedly a large group postholed all the way to the summit, leaving a very rough surface for skiing. Wright Peak has good cover above the junction with the hiking trail, which was rough but skiable - likely not so skiable now.  Northside Trail to Johns Brook Lodge no longer passable on skis.
Skis and snowshoes still required in the High Peaks Wilderness Area and needed elsewhere along with traction aids for any steep terrain.
      • Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
      • Lake ice now questionable, although Avalanche and Colden will be o.k. once the temperatures drop.
      • All other popular tours (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Raquette Falls, Fish Pond, Newcomb Lake, Moose Pond, Ausable Lake Road, Whiteface Highway) still have cover.  Whiteface Highway still thin or even bare above the Lake Placid Turn.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  Tuesday saw temperatures in the 40s with intermittent rain.  Some open areas now bare, but still good cover in the woods in the Lake Placid area.  Cooler as of Wednesday morning with chance of some new snow Wednesday through Friday.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear we'll get very much new snow by the weekend, and with temperatures not going much above freezing surface conditions will be hard and fast.  "Spring surfaces" means hard when below freezing, soft corn snow when above.  Best skiing will therefore likely be at the groomed centers once they are able to get out.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •               Base Depth - 0-10 inches
                  Surface Conditions - spring surfaces
                  Km Open - 25
Remarks - River Road and golf course sections now not skiable

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 35 " (before thaw.  Should have update on 3/14)
                    Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4-1/2 - 5 feet
                    Surface Conditions:  spring surfaces
Remarks:  Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj to Marcy Dam was rated "rough but skiable" before the thaw.  The truck trail is again the only recommended ski route to Marcy Dam.  Avalanche Pass should have maintained its cover.   Calamity Brook Trail and Flowed Lands were very skiable, but thaw may have opened brooks and/or the river in Flowed Lands.  Marcy Trail still a bit rough just above Marcy Dam, but the main problem is that reportedly a large group postholed all the way to the summit, leaving a very rough surface for skiing. Wright Peak has good cover above the junction with the hiking trail, which was rough but skiable - likely not so skiable now.  Northside Trail to Johns Brook Lodge no longer passable on skis.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  After a week or so of mid-winter conditions, we've moved on to spring conditions.  Generally that will mean cool nights and crusty conditions each day before the frozen granular transitions to corn snow. First, however, we'll have to get past the temperatures predicted to be in the 50s on Monday followed by rain Monday night and Tuesday.  Cooling off Tuesday night with temperatures below freezing every night and the chance of some new snow Wednesday.  So far, it appears we have enough snow to survive the rain with good cover remaining.  Next update on Wednesday, 3/13, when we see what the rain has done.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •               Base Depth - 8-15 inches
                  Surface Conditions - spring surfaces
                  Km Open - 50
              Remarks - Entire trail skiable

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 35 "
                    Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4-1/2 - 5 feet

      • All other popular tours (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Raquette Falls, Fish Pond, Newcomb Lake, Moose Pond, Ausable Lake Road, Whiteface Highway) in good shape.  Whiteface Highway still thin or even bare above the Lake Placid Turn.

  • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  After the snows of last week and weekend, we are closer to "mid-winter" conditions than we've been in two years with definitely the best conditions of this year.  We picked up 1-2" new snow Thursday night. Friday will clear with temperatures in the 30s.  Then warming to near 40 on Saturday and in the 40s on Sunday under mostly sunny skies.  Sunday night through Tuesday night will continue warm with some chance of rain showers, but cooling off on Wednesday, so not a season-ending thaw.  Great weekend to get out, and fortunately not the last weekend.  Next update on Monday, 3/11, when we have a better idea of just how warm it will be Monday and Tuesday.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •               Base Depth - 10-20 inches
                  Surface Conditions - powder
                  Km Open - 50
Remarks -  Entire trail skiable with the exception that WHITEFACE CLUB TO MCKENZIE POND ROAD SECTION WILL BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY.  The reason is the planned removal of the crashed plane via helicopter lift and the concern that pieces could fall off the plane.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 40"
                    Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4-1/2 - 5 feet
                    Surface Conditions:   powder
Remarks: New snow plus some settling means the same depth as last week, just a denser snowpack underneath.  Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj to Marcy Dam rated "rough but skiable."  Better if taking the Old Marcy Dam Trail from the campground.  The truck trail is still the better skiing.  Avalanche Pass is in good shape.   Calamity Brook Trail and Flowed Lands also very skiable.  Lower part of the Marcy Trail still a bit rough but definitely skiable thanks to some judicious shoveling just below the Phelps Mt. trail junction.  Good cover above the Phelps Brook bridge 1.2 mi. beyond Marcy Dam. (This is also known as 50 meter bridge because at one time the bridge there was about 50 meters long.)   Wright Peak has good skiing above the junction with the hiking trail, which is now rough but skiable.  Northside Trail to Johns Brook Lodge passable on skis.
Skis and snowshoes definitely required in the High Peaks Wilderness Area and needed elsewhere.
      • Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
      • Lake ice safe and mostly slush free.

    •               Base Depth - 10-20 inches
Surface Conditions - powder and crust

    • INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:  After the recent snows, we are closer to "mid-winter" conditions than we've been in two years.  We had hoped for some significant new snow on Wednesday, but temperatures were right around freezing or slightly above all day.  The result was a day of "white rain" and relatively little accumulation.  It was colder higher up, so there was more snow above 2,000 feet, and some new snow on Friday. So far, the forecast calls for continued near freezing temperatures through the weekend with a bit more snow.  A bit cooler on Saturday, followed by temperatures again in the 30s by Sunday.  Surface conditions should be soft, wet powder today and Friday, a bit crunchy on Saturday, and then soft again on Sunday.

                    Km Open - 50
Remarks -  Entire trail skiable.  Snowmobile tracks on the McKenzie Pond to Whiteface Inn section due to rescue activity related to a plane crash (no serious injuries) last Thursday night.

        BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 45"
                      Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 4-1/2 - 5 feet
                      Surface Conditions:   powder and crust
Remarks:   Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj to Marcy Dam rated "rough but skiable."  Better if taking the Old Marcy Dam Trail from the campground.  The truck trail is still the best, if longer, ski approach to Marcy Dam, but some rocks still showing on the truck trail - especially on one corner not quite a mile from the register.  Still a few rocks to dodge from Marcy Dam to Avalanche Camp, but after that Avalanche Pass is in good shape.   Calamity Brook trail and Flowed Lands also very skiable with only one tricky crossing of a small stream and with a few rocks showing on the lower downhills.  Lower part of the Marcy Trail now rough but skiable thanks to some judicious shoveling just below the Phelps Mt. trail junction.  Good cover above the Phelps Brook bridge 1.2 mi. beyond Marcy Dam. (This is also known as 50 meter bridge because at one time the bridge there was about 50 meters long.)   Wright Peak still only skiable above the junction with the hiking trail.  Northside Trail to Johns Brook Lodge passable on skis, but probably still not recommended due to numerous rocks and roots still showing as Keene Valley has not picked up the snow other areas have.
Skis and snowshoes definitely required in the High Peaks Wilderness Area and needed elsewhere.
        • Meadow Lane has been blocked off for the winter, adding 3/4 mile to approach of Marcy Dam.
        • Lake ice generally safe and slush free.
        • All other popular tours (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Raquette Falls, Fish Pond, Newcomb Lake, Moose Pond, Ausable Lake Road) in good shape.  Whiteface Highway still likely very thin for about half its length due to continued high winds with the new snow.  Especially thin or even bare above the Lake Placid Turn.
