Conditions 4/21/2015 (Final die-hard edition)

4/21/2015

The past four days have seen significant melting everywhere so that the only skiing left is in the high country beyond Marcy Dam.  Some slides and the Marcy trail are still skiable - but only after a walk to Marcy Dam.

Hiking trails are still very wet where the snow has recently melted.  This changes to an unstable snow spine at higher elevations.  A good time to stick to more southern hiking destinations where the ground has dried out.  Those who want to hike in this area can try Bald Peak from New Russia, Little Porter from the Garden, or Rooster Comb.

      • As expected, the warm weather this past week has melted much snow, but there is still snow on north-facing slopes from 2,000 feet and pretty much everywhere above 3,000 ft.  Continued warm through the weekend and into next week with significant rain expected on Monday. Ski it while you can.
      • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
    •              Base Depth - 0-8"
    •                Surface Conditions -Spring
                     Km Open -  ??
  •                        Remarks -  Section above Whiteface Inn Road to the top of the pass still has good cover, but is now the only section that can be recommended.

    • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 28"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  4-5'
                    Surface Conditions: Spring
Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.  Skis or snowshoes still required in the High Peaks, needed elsewhere.
      •  Marcy and Wright Peak still have good cover, although hiking trail part of Wright Peak Ski Trail won't be good skiing  Approach to Marcy Dam from ADK Loj is still mostly skiable.  Truck trail is longer but definitely better skiing, although there will be some lengthy bare spots.  Over a foot at Marcy Dam and beyond with good cover all the way through Avalanche Pass.
      • Ice on Avalanche Lake questionable, and water on the surface will make the trail the better choice. No other lake use is safe. Opalescent no longer crossable in Flowed Lands.
      • Whiteface Highway remains skiable from the Toll House. Upper part finally has cover.
      • Keene Valley/Garden Parking to JBL No longer skiable. Still good cover for skiing beyond JBL.
      • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake packed by snowmobiles and skiable.

        •  Still nearly a foot of snow in the woods in the Lake Placid area although open areas and south-facing slopes are mostly bare.  Warm all week with rain possible on the coming weekend.  Next update on Friday, 4/17.
        • The rule as stated before will be SPRING CONDITIONS, i.e. potentially hard and icy when temperatures are below freezing and soft and slow when they are above freezing. That said, only the higher terrain is likely to drop below freezing at night this week, and by the time you are ready to come down it should be soft.
        • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
      •              Base Depth - 0-8"
      •                Surface Conditions -Spring
                       Km Open -  ??
    •                        Remarks - Most sections still have skiable cover, but bare spots will be developing this week.  Section above Whiteface Inn Road will retain its cover for at least another week.
        BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 32"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'
                      Surface Conditions: Spring
Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.  Skis or snowshoes still required in the High Peaks, needed elsewhere.
        • Most popular routes including Marcy and Wright Peak still have good cover, although hiking trail part of Wright Peak Ski Trail probably won't be skiable by the coming weekend. Approach to Marcy Dam from ADK Loj is hard and fast.  Truck trail is longer but definitely better skiing, although a few bare spots as of 4/12.  About two feet at Marcy Dam and beyond with good cover all the way through Avalanche Pass with continuous cover likely to last through next weekend.
        • Ice on Avalanche Lake still safe as of Sunday 4/12 and will remain so for at least a week despite the warm weather.  Water on the surface, however will soon make the trail the better choice.

        • We have picked up 3-4 inches of wet powder on Wednesday night, but we don't expect it to stick around very long as rain is predicted to start later today with temperatures in the 40s Friday and Saturday and then in the high 50s on Sunday.  Before this snow, open areas and south-facing slopes below 2,000 feet are mostly bare, but snow remained everywhere else.  Still over a foot of snow in the woods in the Lake Placid area.
        • Te rule as stated before will be SPRING CONDITIONS, i.e. potentially hard and icy when temperatures are below freezing and soft and slow when they are above freezing.  Any new snow will, of course, change that equation for a short time, but from now on it's watching the thermometer.
        •
        • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
      •              Base Depth - 0-8"
      •                Surface Conditions - Wet powder and frozen granular
Km Open - 50 km - except bare ground along River Rd. in Lake Placid, on the Lake Placid Club golf course, and at the start of the trail off McKenzie Pond Rd.
    •                        Remarks -
        BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 34"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'
Surface Conditions: Wet powder and frozen granular
Meadow Lane now closed for the winter.  Adds nearly a mile each way on the Marcy Dam Truck Trail.  Skis or snowshoes required in the High Peaks, needed elsewhere.
        • All popular routes including Marcy and Wright Peak still have good cover. Approach to Marcy Dam from ADK Loj is hard and fast.  Truck trail is longer but definitely better skiing.
        • Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden still safe and will remain so at least a week.  Opalescent still crossable in Flowed Lands, but no guarantees at the AllenMt. crossing.  Other lakes also safe for now, but watch for any inlets that might have locally weakened the ice.
        • Whiteface Highway remains skiable from the Toll House. No current report on the upper part that has been icy with bare areas due to the high winds we have experienced this season.
        • Keene Valley/Garden Parking to JBL not checked, but likely not continuously skiable. Good cover for skiing beyond JBL.
        • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake packed by snowmobiles and skiable.

      • Thursday and Friday saw temperatures near 60 in most areas (but so far none of the predicted rain), and therefore  plenty of snow is still left.  Open areas and south-facing slopes below 2,000 feet are mostly bare, but snow remains everywhere else.  Still over a foot of snow in the woods in the Lake Placid area.  It will cool down Friday night with 3-4" of new snow expected after initially starting as rain.  Next week will remain colder than normal with a continued chance of additional snow along with some rain, so no significant melting for yet another week.
      • We thus continue to expect our snow cover to last well into April.  As stated in earlier reports,  the rule will now be SPRING CONDITIONS, i.e. potentially hard and icy when temperatures are below freezing and soft and slow when they are above freezing.  Any new snow will, of course, change that equation for a short time, but from now on it's watching the thermometer or skiing at the groomed centers as long as they are open.

Km Open - 50 km - except bare ground along River Rd. in Lake Placid and on the Lake Placid Club golf course.
  •                        Remarks - Steeper sections on Old Mt. Road section and McKenzie section not recommended unless there is new snow or it is above freezing.

      BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 34"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet:  5-6'

      • All popular routes including Marcy and Wright Peak have excellent cover, but only recommended with new snow or warmer temperatures.  Approach to Marcy Dam from ADK Loj is hard and fast.  Truck trail is longer but definitely better skiing.
      • Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden still safe and will remain so at least a week.  Opalescent still crossable in Flowed Lands, but no guarantees at the AllenMt. crossing with even this slight additional melting.  Other lakes also safe for now, but watch for any inlets that might have locally weakened the ice.
