Somewhere up in the clouds there is skiing on the Whiteface Highway, and the good news is that constructions is over for the season. Let's hope this means no unexpected plowing or other interruption to the traditional early season skiing this highway provides.
Cold, rainy condition will persist through Friday, but the weekend will see a clearing trend. Consider coming out on Saturday to help maintain drainage and make other improvements on the Jackrabbit Trail section leading from Whiteface Inn Lane toward Saranac Lake. Meet 9 AM at the Jackrabbit trailhead on Whiteface Inn Lane. Tools provided, but bring a rake or shovel if so inclined.

Saturday night and Sunday did produce some accumulating white stuff above 2,500 ft. Not enough to actually make the Whiteface Highway skiable even with a walk up a mile or so. Temperatures will remain below normal for the next few days, but it is doubtful that any skiable snow will result.
Nevertheless, we'll check in with ORDA to try and get a handle on the ongoing construction on the Whiteface Highway and how that might affect early season skiing. We had a few cool days and maybe even a bit of snow on the highest peaks. No snow in sight, but the fall colors are the best we've seen for several years. At this time we're not sure how the major construction work on the Whiteface Highway will affect our usual earliest skiing opportunity, but we'll find out what work is planned as soon as there is any possibility of skiing there. At the moment, the highway is closed to vehicles during the week with signs clearly indicating that pedestrians are not permitted while work is in progress.
