Conditions 11/29/13

Now that the storms(s) have passed it's definitely wintry, but without any really good skiing to report.  A few inches of fluff on an icy base with most open areas blown clear is the summary report.  Mt. Van Hoevenberg is open  as of Friday on 10km of the flatter terrain and is likely the best skiing.  Whiteface Highway should have cover, but will be icy with long windblown stretches even on the lower sections, and that's if it isn't being plowed - something we'll check on as of Monday.  Whiteface Club Golf Course is the golf course most likely to be sheltered from the wind and have at least some terrain to slide around on.  We had hoped the Marcy Dam Truck Trail might be skiable, but looks as though that needs a bit more snow.  Submit a comment if you do find it better than expected.  3" of snow in Newcomb means the Newcomb Lake Road would likely be just barely skiable.

The forecast is for cold temperatures to continue for at least another week with possibly a few more inches on Sunday.

Hiking trails are very icy with traction aids practically mandatory for any of the steeper trails; and be prepared for full winter conditions on the summits.

Sleet, Snow, Sleet, Snow, etc

As of Wednesday morning, there is a mixed bag of wet snow in the area.  At 8:10 AM, it is raining in Lake Placid with a mere two inches of sloppy snow on the ground.  The good news is that temperatures are expected to drop this evening and this sloppy mess may well turn into a firm base.  The snow/rain line appears to be to the west of the high peaks area.  We'll have to wait and see what develops overnight.

The maintainers of this report are heading out of town for Thanksgiving, so this will most likely be the last report until Sunday.

Happy Thanksgiving.  Enjoy family and friends.

First Winter Storm on the Way!

11/26/2013

As of Tuesday morning, the first winter storm of the season is on its way.  The weather services are calling for six to twelve inches by Thursday morning, which should make many of the flatter trails in the area fully available for skiing.  But as usual, the storm predictions and the storm outcomes are often different, so we're in wait and see mode.  It appears that the heavier snows will fall to the west, so the Fish Creek Road might be a good call.

Currently, in the Lake Placid area, most open surfaces with grass as the base are able to be skied, but rock skis are suggested.

We'll stay tuned to the weather and keep this site updated as the storm arrives.

As of Saturday afternoon the snow has started to come down with 2-4 inches predicted by Sunday morning.  The good news is that this will make the Whiteface Highway skiable again.  The bad news is that temperatures will only rise to the teens in the valley and the winds will be in the 30-40 mph range.  Expect many sections of the Highway to be blown mostly clear, but it should all be skiable - just not nice conditions to be out there.

Otherwise, the rest of the week looks very promising with mostly below average temperatures and intermittent snow.  The Highway should thus be in good shape for Thanksgiving weekend with maybe the Marcy Dam Truck Trail and/or the Newcomb Lake Road also skiable.

In the peaks, probably not snowshoe conditions for next weekend, but definitely winter conditions on the summits with traction aids pretty much mandatory for any of the higher, steeper trails.

As of Friday evening, what little snow there might have bee on the Whiteface Highway had bee plowed off so that our esteemed Governor could be driven to the top and announce $12 million in new funds that are badly needed to repair the highway for driving.  Thus we are starting from "scratch", but the weather Saturday looks promising. Exactly when the Highway will be skiable in anyones guess.  While we consider these reports to be reliable and timely, we can't claim that they are in "real-time".  Therefore look for an update tomorrow evening about the possibilities for skiing on Sunday.

Sunday's warm temperatures and rain pretty much ended our first "season" of skiing on the Whiteface Highway - at least for the first two miles up from the toll house.  Warm today, Monday, but cooling off again.  Unfortunately not much if any snow in the forecast before next weekend, but we'll check and update if it looks as tough skiing will be possible next weekend.

Meanwhile, expect near winter conditions on all of the higher summits with traction aids practically mandatory for any of the higher, steeper trails.

Cold temperatures plus precipitation last Sunday and Monday has produced just enough snow to ski  the Whiteface Highway right from the Toll House.  The first half-mile is thin, but then there is more snow and finally good snow after two miles. Even then, sections have part of the highway blown clear, but no problem skiing to the Castle.

The weather has warmed with valley temperatures warming into the upper 40s on Saturday and in the 50s to near 60 by Sunday.  Saturday would be the better day than Sunday.  Monday now appears to be near 60 with rain, which will pretty much end skiing on the lower two miles, but cooling off after that with another chance of snow.  Stay tuned, it's still early.  And Whiteface Mt. will be open this weekend with skiing on Excelsior from the top of Little Whiteface.

Meanwhile, expect near winter conditions on all of the higher summits with traction aids practically mandatory for any of the higher, steeper trails.

Looks like Winter

Cold temperatures plus on and off precipitation on Sunday has produced just enough snow as of Monday to ski  the Whiteface Highway right from the Toll House.  The first half-mile can only be described as "slideable" but then there is more snow and finally good snow after two miles. Even then, sections have part of the highway blown clear, but no problem skiing to the Castle.

Cold weather will continue through the middle of the week with valley temperatures warming into the 40s by the weekend.  Should still be skiing for this coming weekend.

Meanwhile, expect near winter conditions on all of the higher summits with traction aids practically mandatory for any of the higher, steeper trails.
