- INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
- Sunday's forecast called for 3" of new snow followed by rapidly falling temperatures. Unfortunately, only one part of that forecast came true - the falling temperatures. We did get a dusting to an inch, but not enough to change overall conditions. There is still a thin, icy base in most area with a dusting of powder on top. Temperatures will be well below normal for most of the week before recovering to highs of 15 on Saturday. We may get a bit of new snow Tuesday night and into Wednesday, but now there is the possibility of some additional snow on Thursday into Friday. This second chance will be the edges of a coastal storm. So no reliable predictions at the moment, but we could be back to good conditions
- Garnet Hill, Lapland Lake, the free BREIA trails in Booneville, and Osceola Tug Hill are still reporting enough snow for skiing, and definitely the southwest Adirondacks had enough from the lake effect to not have melted down. Nevertheless, surface conditions will be poor - hence the best skiing will be at those groomed centers.
- JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
- Base Depth - 2"
- Surface Conditions - dust on crust
- Remarks - Flatter sections such as the Peninsula skiable. River Rd. to Rt. 86 has been skied, but cover is very thin under any fir trees.
BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 6"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 8-10" (estimated)
Surface Conditions: Crust with a few inches or so of powder on top.
Remarks: Newcomb is back up to 5" and the gentle terrain of the road to Newcomb Lake is now definitely skiable. Skis or snowshoes no longer required, but micospikes or crampons will be practically mandatory right from the parking lot. Lake Colden did pick up 4" of very light snow, but that has settled back down so virtually no net gain in snow depth. Better surfaces for skiing however once one gets to the lake.
In addition to Newcomb Lake Road, not many of the early season favorites are a sure bet at the moment. The Hays Brook and Fish Pond Truck Trails have cover, but many blowdowns from the icing event before Christmas. No report on Raquette Falls, but likely not quite enough cover yet. Ausable Lake Road has an inch or so of fluff on an icy base. Likewise, Marcy Dam Truck Trail is fluff on crust with rocks that must be dodged.- Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden and all other smaller bodies of water safe to cross, just be very careful around inlets or outlets (report of one mishap at Avalanche Lake outlet). Unbridged streams have mostly "gone out" and may be difficult to cross unless they have refrozen, but Opalescent River close to being crossable in Flowed Lands, so another night of cold weather should solve that problem.
Definitely be prepared for full winter weather conditions on any bare summit.

Saturday was warm and rainy across most of the Lake Placid/High Peaks region. The major icing was further north. The result is that all x-c centers (Van Ho, Cascade, Paul Smiths) are now closed, and there's not much in between that can be recommended. Newcomb still has about 3" of the foot that they had as of Friday, so the road to Newcomb Lake should still be skiable. Otherwise, not much.
We do expect some additional rain on Sunday, after which it will cool off, but still no significant new snow in sight. A week ago it looked as though we were off to the best start in years, but …. Saturday morning has dawned with an amazing range of temperatures and conditions. The good news seems to be that the Lake Placid - Saranac Lake - High Peaks area will miss most of the severe icing. The bad news is that temperatures are in the 40s with some rain, so by Sunday afternoon we will have lost much of the snow that we had. It also does not appear we will get much new snow as this weather system exits. Temperatures will cool as of Monday and be below zero Tuesday night before warming to seasonal normals by the end of the week with a chance of some light snow.
Given that conditions are changing so rapidly, no full report until Monday when the storm has passed. In the meantime, think of the irony of the Saranac Lake Ultra Sixer challenge. The first day for the summer challenge was Memorial Day when participants had to deal with over a foot of snow. On the first day of the winter challenge by contrast, rain is the main problem.
