INTRODUCTION

Well, after our "Christmas miracle" the Grinch ultimately came back with a vengeance Friday night.  Yesterday's late afternoon update dared to be optimistic that the thaw was mostly over; but after dark, temperatures soared to near 50 with a wind.  Cold weather has returned as of Saturday afternoon, but the base is gone on any south slopes or open areas.  Best bet for Sunday - Tuesday will be Cascade X-C Ski Center where their wind-sheltered trails hung onto some decent cover.
The only good news from these thaws is that now some frost can finally get into the ground and freeze up many of the little seeps that have been plaguing backcountry trails up until now.  Lake ice will also be able to thicken without the snow cover.  This will improve backcountry for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, expect icy conditions anywhere outside of the groomed centers.  For hiking, traction is essential for any even moderately steep trails, and snowshoes may still be needed on unbroken terrain. Stream crossings will be difficult with ice-covered rocks showing as the water goes back down.

JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS
Base depth:  2-6"
  •  Surface Conditions:  Frozen granular
  •  Km Open -
  •  Remarks -  No section really recommended until we get a bit more snow.

  • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
  • Snow depth at Lake Colden: 16"
  • Snow depth at 4,000 feet - 2-3 feet
  • Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj not  skiable.  Truck trail maybe skiable, but not recommended.
  • Avalanche Pass has cover, but is too icy to be skiable.  Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden are crossable with care, but stay well away from inlets or outlets after these thaws.
  • Marcy and Wright Peak were skiable higher up and still have a base once we get more snow.
  • All of the  truck trail skis (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Fish Pond, etc.) are too icy to be recommended.
  • Whiteface Highway - Still being plowed
  • Keene Valley/Garden Parking - Not skiable.
  • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake: Also too icy to be skiable.
  • Newcomb area has at least 4-6 inches of base snow, so Newcomb Lake Road could be skiable with a few inches of new snow.
  • Gulf Brook Road to Boreas Ponds has good cover, and the parking area is now being plowed.  Also will be skiable with some more snow.

Update 12/28/18

So far the latest thaw hasn't been as bad as the previous Friday thaw.  Temperatures never reached 50, and there was relatively little rain or wind.  All the nice new powder on top of the crust is gone, but the base remains mostly intact.  Once the temperatures drop, it will be too icy for much good skiing, but at least the base remains so a few inches will make a significant improvement.  Look for a more complete report tomorrow after we can survey the groomed centers and look at what might have still melted overnight before it cools down.

INTRODUCTION

Well, a minor "Christmas miracle" in that the predicted 0-2" of new snow turned into 2-4". This has made more terrain skiable - at least until the Grinch comes in with the next thaw on Friday. There is currently no agreement among forecasters whether Friday will be just a "wintry mix" or pure rain and temperatures near 50.  Cold weather again afterwards, some will still hang on to a base.
The only good news from these thaws is that now some frost can finally get into the ground and freeze up many of the little seeps that have been plaguing backcountry trails up until now.  Lake ice will also be able to thicken without the snow cover.  This will improve backcountry for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, expect icy conditions on all hiking trails that have been previously broken out, and a breakable crust on previously unbroken sections.  Traction essential for any even moderately steep trails, and snowshoes still needed on unbroken terrain. Stream crossings will be difficult with ice-covered rocks showing as the water goes back down.

JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS
Base depth:  2-6"
  •  Surface Conditions:  powder on frozen granular
  •  Km Open - 15
  •  Remarks -  Steeper sections not really recommended, but the gentler terrain at each end of the Old Mt. Road section plus the Peninsula section will be fine
  • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
  • Snow depth at Lake Colden: 16"
  • Snow depth at 4,000 feet - 2-3 feet
  • Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj not really skiable.  Truck trail skiable, although still a bit rough.
  • Avalanche Pass is still not really skiable.  Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden are crossable with care, but stay well away from inlets or outlets after last Friday's thaw.
  • Marcy and Wright Peak were skiable higher up and still have a base once we get more snow.
  • All of the  truck trail skis (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Fish Pond, etc.) are again skiable.
  • Whiteface Highway - Still being plowed
  • Keene Valley/Garden Parking - Not skiable.
  • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake: Not really skiable even after getting past the bare areas at the start as the new snow hasn't covered up the rough, icy surface underneath.
  • Newcomb area has at least 4-6 inches of base snow, so Newcomb Lake Road is skiable.
  • Gulf Brook Road to Boreas Ponds has good cover, and the parking area is now being plowed.  There is some slightly rough surfaces on the base underneath the 3" of new snow as far as the summer parking area, but mostly smooth beyond there except for a few short stretches with water damage.

INTRODUCTION

Not the Christmas week wanted, but at least the ground is still white (mostly) and there is a chance of up to 2" of new snow today, Monday.   That much new snow would make at least some of the gentler terrain skiable.  Unfortunately, the current forecast doesn't look particularly good for Thursday and Friday, but so far it only looks like a "wintry mix" and not the meltdown we experienced last Friday.  The only good news from this thaw is that now some frost can finally get into the ground and freeze up many of the little seeps that have been plaguing backcountry trails up until now.

I sincerely hope you were able to enjoy the snow that we've had for the last month when nearly every popular ski route was skiable.  Unfortunately, 'all good things must come to an end', as they say, as tomorrow will see rain and temperatures near or above 50 with high winds as well.  Cooling down a bit on Saturday, and back below freezing by Sunday, but no significant new snow in the forecast after this thaw.  Right now we're not willing to predict where  we will hold onto a base and whether that would again be skiable with just a few new inches of snow.  We will, however, get out and about after Sunday to see what's what for Christmas week.   Stay tuned.

Update 12/18/18:

As predicted, the temperatures dropped back to just below normal as of Tuesday morning.  Only maybe an inch of new snow fell overnight with no new snow in the forecast before it warms up again on Thursday. The forecast for the end of the week has deteriorated with now temperatures in the upper 40s and a 90% chance of rain.  Cooler on Saturday, and a return to below freezing by Sunday.  We won't lose all of our accumulated base in any but some open areas and lower elevation south-facing slopes. Surfaces will be hard and fast after the rain until we get several inches of new snow.  The only glimmer of good news is that this rain will remove most of the insulating value of the snow that is here, allowing some of the annoying little seeps to finally freeze up and become covered with snow.

Over the weekend, many backcountry trails suffered from post-holders and are no longer as nice skiing as they were before the weekend. Marcy Dam Truck Trail in particular still is fully covered, but not easy skiing.
Introduction
  •    After some consistently cold weather this week, temperatures will warm up on Friday with a chance of some rain on Friday afternoon and evening. It will remain warm through Sunday, but with little chance of additional rain, so no significant loss of snow before it cools back down to the 20s on Tuesday.  So we continue to have mid-winter conditions in just mid-December, but we probably shouldn't get used to it.   Next week it looks to be cold again on Tuesday and Wednesday, but no chance of any significant new snow.  Then warming up on Thursday and Friday with perhaps  a repeat of this weekend's warmth with again a threat of some rain.  Stay tuned.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS Base depth:  10-14"
    •  Surface Conditions:  Powder
    •  Km Open - 50
    •  Remarks -  All sections skiable.  All sections have been broken out.

    • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
    • Snow depth at Lake Colden: 30"
    • Snow depth at 4,000 feet - 3-4 feet
    • Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj skiable.  Truck trail very skiable.
    • Avalanche Pass still a bit rough getting from Marcy Dam to Avalanche Camp, but the ski trail to the top of the pass is in good shape.  Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden are crossable with care, but stay away from inlets or outlets.
    • Marcy and Wright Peak skiable higher up, but still a bit rough getting to 3,000 feet.  Current photo of the Marcy Trail just after the Phelps Brook crossing above marcy Dam below.  "Not ready for prime-time" skiing just yet.
        • All of the  truck trail skis (Connery Pond, Hays Brook, Fish Pond, etc.) are now fully skiable.
        • Whiteface Highway - Still being plowed
        • Keene Valley/Garden Parking - Not yet skiable, but getting close
        • Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake: Good cover, but now being snowmobiled.
        • Newcomb area has 12-15 inches of snow, so Newcomb Lake Road is good skiing. Sufficient snow to ski to Moose Pond, but still no report whether the trees that were down last summer have been cleared.
        • Boreas Ponds also skiable, but no current plowing of the off- road parking, and  the road may not have been broken out.
        • Mr. Van Ski Trail from Mount Van Hoevenberg X-C Ski Center to ADK Loj has now been cleared of most blowdown.  What blowdown is left can be bypassed, but many, many water holes make for a less than enjoyable ski. But another hard freeze and some new snow could change that
        • SKIS OR SNOWSHOES ARE NOW REQUIRED PAST MARCY DAM IN THE HIGH PEAKS AND SHOULD BE USED NOW ON MOST OTHER TRAILS.

  • Update 12/11/18
  • Conditions remain at near mid-winter as reported below.  Forecast for the rest of the week and weekend has improved with regards to how much rain we might receive each of those days.  Currently, it is not much rain but mostly a "wintry mix", but we won't know for sure until Sunday when the temperatures again cool.  So, at least no major thaw with this weather pattern.  We did work on the Mr. Van Ski Trail today.  Others had broken it out last weekend, but reported some significant new blowdown.  All of the smaller stuff that was the major impediment to travel has now been cleared, but numerous difficult water crossings make this trail still not really recommended as anything but an "adventure".  We'll hope that the continued cold tightens up these wet areas so he new snow can accumulate there. Next complete report on Thursday when at least the weekend weather may be a bit more definite.

  • Introduction
  •    Cold weather and snow have returned this week, so even now in early-December we can report near mid-winter conditions with no thaw in sight.  It's powder surfaces everywhere, but still not quite enough to fully cover all obstacles on any rougher trails.

  • JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS Base depth:  8-12"
    •  Surface Conditions:  Powder
    •  Km Open - 50
    •  Remarks -  All sections skiable.  Most sections have been broken out.

    • BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS
    • Snow depth at Lake Colden: 24"
    • Snow depth at 4,000 feet - 4+ feet
    • Hiking trail from Adirondak Loj skiable.  Truck trail very skiable.
    • Avalanche Pass still a bit rough getting from Marcy Dam to Avalanche Camp, but the ski trail to the top of the pass is in good shape.  Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden are crossable with care, but stay away from inlets or outlets.
    • Marcy and Wright Peak skiable higher up, but still a bit rough getting to 3,000 feet.
Sufficient snow to ski to Moose Pond, but no report whether the trees that were down last summer have been cleared.
        • Boreas Ponds also skiable, but no current plowing of the off- road parking, and  the road may not have been broken out.
        • SKIS OR SNOWSHOES ARE NOW REQUIRED PAST MARCY DAM IN THE HIGH PEAKS AND SHOULD BE USED NOW ON MOST OTHER TRAILS.
