- INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
- We have picked up another inch or so of light snow in the past 24 hours. Not enough to really change conditions, but every little bit is a help. Temperatures will be well below normal for most of the week before recovering to highs of 15 on Saturday. As currently predicted, Thursday's coastal storm will see another 2-3" - not what we need, and definitely not what airline travelers need in New York or Philadelphia.
- Garnet Hill, Lapland Lake, the free BREIA trails in Booneville, and Osceola Tug Hill have enough snow for skiing, and the southwestern Adirondacks picked up as much as 10" on Tuesday, so those backcountry trails are back in reasonably good shape.
- JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
- Base Depth - 2-3"
- Surface Conditions - dust on crust
- Remarks - Flatter sections such as the Peninsula skiable. River Rd. to Rt. 86 has been skied, but cover is very thin under any fir trees. This new snow has made other sections that maintained a base possible to ski, but still not really recommended. We'll be checking conditions today to see if there is anything better to report.
BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 6"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 8-10" (estimated)
Surface Conditions: Crust with a few inches or so of powder on top.
Remarks: With another inch, Newcomb is up to 6" and the gentle terrain of the road to Newcomb Lake is now definitely skiable. Skis or snowshoes no longer required, but micospikes or crampons will be practically mandatory right from the parking lot. Lake Colden did pick up another inch or so of light snow, but settling in the last few days means no net gain from earlier reports.
In addition to Newcomb Lake Road, not many of the early season favorites are a sure bet at the moment. The Hays Brook and Fish Pond Truck Trails have cover, but many blowdowns from the icing event before Christmas. No report on Raquette Falls, but likely not quite enough cover yet. Ausable Lake Road has an inch or so of fluff on an icy base and with the new snow could be skied. Likewise, Marcy Dam Truck Trail is fluff on crust with rocks that must be dodged and- Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden and all other smaller bodies of water safe to cross, just be very careful around inlets or outlets (report of one mishap at Avalanche Lake outlet). Unbridged streams have mostly "gone out" and may be difficult to cross unless they have refrozen, but Opalescent River close to being crossable in Flowed Lands, so another night of cold weather should solve that problem.
Definitely be prepared for full winter weather conditions on any bare summit.
