Conditions 11/29/13

11/29/2013

Now that the storms(s) have passed it's definitely wintry, but without any really good skiing to report.  A few inches of fluff on an icy base with most open areas blown clear is the summary report.  Mt. Van Hoevenberg is open  as of Friday on 10km of the flatter terrain and is likely the best skiing.  Whiteface Highway should have cover, but will be icy with long windblown stretches even on the lower sections, and that's if it isn't being plowed - something we'll check on as of Monday.  Whiteface Club Golf Course is the golf course most likely to be sheltered from the wind and have at least some terrain to slide around on.  We had hoped the Marcy Dam Truck Trail might be skiable, but looks as though that needs a bit more snow.  Submit a comment if you do find it better than expected.  3" of snow in Newcomb means the Newcomb Lake Road would likely be just barely skiable.

The forecast is for cold temperatures to continue for at least another week with possibly a few more inches on Sunday.

Hiking trails are very icy with traction aids practically mandatory for any of the steeper trails; and be prepared for full winter conditions on the summits.

Ausable Club trail is just barely skiable after the first 50 yards past the gate all the way to the lake.

Has anyone skied the toll rd today or yesterday?

Whiteface Toll Road very skiable as of yesterday (Friday 11/29). Sketchy bottom (very thin cover) and top (icy), but the middle is quite nice. The road is plowed shoulder to shoulder, but there was enough new snow (1-4 inches) and enough snowy spots to pick your way through and have a very enjoyable ski. So, if "they" need to get up and down with vehicles, why can't "they" leave a skiable margin? It doesn't seem reasonable or necessary to plow shoulder-to- shoulder.

Town of Tupper Lake trails at the golf course are groomed and quite skiable (lower trails only). No track set, but coverage is good with an inch or 2 of powder on frozen base.
