- INTRODUCTORY REMARKS: This is a "good news/bad news" report. The good news is that we didn't get any significant rain on Monday. The bad news is that we didn't get much if any of the promised 2-4 inches of snow. Some snow falling Tuesday morning, but no predictions of any significant accumulation. Most days this week could see some snow showers along with mid-winter cold temperatures, but the next chance for any significant snow is on Saturday night. Looking at the bright side, this cold weather without snow will freeze up most water courses so that there won't be bare spots due to unfrozen water and the lake ice will get thick and thereby lessen the slush problems.

BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 2-3"

Remarks: Whiteface Highway not skiable as it was plowed earlier this week, and plowing will continue for another two weeks to allow for surveys of the planned repairs.- Meadow Lane is still open and drivable, but it could be closed at any time. Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden again safe to cross now that temperatures have dropped, as the caretaker reported as much as six inches before last week's thaw. Snowshoes not yet required. Traction aids - preferably crampons - definitely needed for any steep trail at any elevation.
- Definitely be prepared for full winter weather conditions on any bare summit.

Any reports on the Newcomb Lake trail?

No direct reports so far. The remote sensing equipment in the nearby Huntington Forest indicates about 3" of snow. That's enough to ski on unless it's just light fluff, hence my reluctance to post that trail as skiable. There will be some strong lake effect snow this week, and that usually gives Newcomb at least some additional snow even though it is far from Lake Ontario. I'll try to get a better report by the weekend even if that means driving down there and checking it out.
