- INTRODUCTORY REMARKS or the Everything has Changed Edition:
- The forecasts for 6-10" of accumulation by Sunday evening appear to be right on, as we have 6-8" as of Sunday morning with the snow continuing to fall. Temperatures through Tuesday will be chilly with nighttime temps below zero and daytime temps only in the low teens. After that, daytime temps rise into the 20s Wednesday and Thursday and then briefly to the 30s on Friday. Some mention of the "R word" on Friday but then back to snow by next Saturday.
-
- JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS:
- Base Depth - 8-10"
- Surface Conditions - powder
- Remarks - Enough new snow that the entire trail is skiable. The snow is light and there isn't much base underneath, so caution is still advised on any downhills.
BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 15-20"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 20-24" (estimated)
Surface Conditions: powder
Remarks: Marcy Dam Truck Trail now very skiable. Whiteface Highway again skiable as it is was not plowed after this latest snow. We'll check on Monday if the surveys of the planned repairs are complete and it won't be plowed in the future.- Otherwise, all of the early season favorites (Hays Brook, Fish Pond, Raquette Falls, Newcomb Lake, and Connery Pond are definitely skiable. Hiking trails and Avalanche Pass may need some time for this new snow to settle before they are really skiable, but we'll pass along any reports.
- Meadow Lane is still open and drivable and will remain so through Saturday. The barriers will likely be placed later this week.
- Ice on Avalanche Lake and Lake Colden safe to cross as is the ice on all smaller bodies of water. Snowshoes or skis now required for all travel in the High Peaks and definitely needed elsewhere. Traction aids - preferably crampons - may still needed for any steep trail at any elevation.
- Definitely be prepared for full winter weather conditions on any bare summit.

Did Cascade and Porter today. 3' +/- in the saddle between Cascade and Porter. It looked like February. Definitely needed snowshoes.
