- INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
- Wednesday's storm brought the are 7-8" of snow pretty much everywhere with virtually no wind and cold temperatures so the snow is nice and light. It's enough to fully recover from the thaws, but not so much as to be arduous when breaking trail. A bit more snow possible each day Friday through Sunday with temperatures moderating to around freezing Saturday and Sunday. Next week will continue mild, but not too warm with again more chances for some additional snow.
- JACKRABBIT TRAIL CONDITIONS
- Base depth: 8-12"
- Surface Conditions: Powder
- Km Open - 50 km
- Remarks - Trail breaking will not be much of an issue as the snow is light. We'll note when the longer sections are broken out. Old Mt. Road section tracked as is McKenzie section. Up to 12" of snow in Paul Smiths, so trail breaking there will be a bit harder, but still not that bad.
BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS- Skis or snowshoes absolutely required by regulation in the High Peaks and needed elsewhere Good traction aids (Microspikes or more aggressive crampons) should be carried if going on the steeper trails as this light snow may slide off the underlying ice. As with the Jackrabbit Trail, trail breaking will not be that much of an issue, but we pass along reports as we get them.
- Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 38"
Snow Depth at 4,000 feet: 5-6'
Surface Conditions: Powder - Hiking trail to Marcy Dam now skiable, Wright Peak and Marcy may still be a bit rough on their lower approaches, but very skiable above the Phelps Mt. junction on Marcy or after leaving the hiking trail on Wright.
- Road to Newcomb Lake and Moose Pond in great shape.
- Fish Pond and Hays Brook truck trails all skiable.
- Lake Colden and Avalanche Lake crossable.
- Whiteface Highway - no current report
- Keene Valley/Garden Parking not skiable to JB before this snow, but it may be now.
- Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake again skiable. Will be packed by snowmobiles.
