Spring Conditions 4/2/18

4/2/2018

April is here, and it looks like a week of typical spring conditions - hard and fast in the morning before softening up in the afternoon.  Mt. Van Hoevenberg will still be doing come limited groomingWednesday through Sunday as here is still good cover on most of their trails.  The other groomed centers have closed for the season.

Old Mt. Road and most of the McKenzie section (thin in from McKenzie Pond Rd.) of the Jackrabbit Trail remain skiable, but wait until it softens up before skiing any of the hills.

Still full cover on all High Peaks trails, but any steep hills will be more suited to traction devices that to even metal-edged skis.  Skis or snowshoes will continue to be required for all backcountry travel in the High Peaks for at least another two weeks.

Weather this week will remain mostly cooler than average.  Low 40s on Tuesday, then rain and temps 35-40 on Wednesday.  Thursday will be clear but cold, barely getting above freezing.  Friday and Saturday will see more light precipitation, and we'll finally see the sun on Sunday.  So, very little melting of snow this week.  Next update on Thursday or Friday when the weekend weather picture is clearer.

What are the conditions on Whiteface Memorial Highway for XC skiing?

Hi Janine,
We're not sure. Generally we stop checking conditions on the WF Highway once the skiing gets good on the trails. If we get any reports about Highway conditions we will post them.

Work on the summit elevator is ongoing, so the highway has probably continued to be plowed. We haven't checked recently as per the previous comment. It is a long detour on a drive home to check, and there is no website or phone number to call.

Very thin cover (1-2 inches) on the trail from the Garden to John's Brook Lodge. I found it more efficient to carry skis for the first mile or so.
